People ask about cost before almost anything else. Not the route, not the weather, not what to pack — the cost. Here is an honest breakdown for 2026, based on current prices for the full Char Dham circuit and the shorter Do Dham (Kedarnath-Badrinath) option.

The Char Dham yatra covers four shrines: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. The circuit is traditionally done west to east. The full loop from Haridwar covers roughly 1,600 kilometres of mountain road, plus the trek to Kedarnath (16 km one way from Gaurikund) and to Yamunotri (6 km from Janki Chatti). Plan for 10-14 days.

The Do Dham — Kedarnath and Badrinath only — takes 5-7 days and skips the western pair.

We are breaking this into categories and giving you three tiers: budget, comfortable, and premium. All prices are per person for 2026 season, assuming two people travelling together.

Getting there

Train (Delhi to Haridwar): Rs 300-1,500 depending on class. Sleeper around Rs 300-400, AC 3-tier Rs 700-900, AC 2-tier Rs 1,200-1,500.

Flight (Delhi to Dehradun): Rs 2,500-7,000 one way.

Bus (Delhi to Haridwar/Rishikesh): Rs 400-1,200.

Transport on the yatra circuit

This is your single largest controllable expense.

A dedicated taxi for the full Char Dham circuit from Haridwar runs Rs 28,000-40,000 for the vehicle (Innova Crysta is standard). Split between two people: Rs 14,000-20,000 each. Shared tempo travellers and buses cost Rs 14,000-17,500 per person. Premium SUVs with experienced drivers: Rs 20,000-30,000 per person.

For Do Dham only (5-7 days): Rs 7,500-10,000 shared, Rs 10,000-15,000 dedicated vehicle split between two, Rs 15,000-20,000 premium.

Accommodation

GMVN guesthouses offer basic rooms from Rs 500-1,000 per night. Mid-range hotels in Joshimath, Barkot, Uttarkashi, and Kedarnath base towns (Phata, Sitapur, Guptkashi) run Rs 1,500-3,000. Premium hotels: Rs 5,000-10,000. At Kedarnath itself, accommodation is limited — expect Rs 500-2,000 for basic rooms.

For 10 nights (full circuit), per person sharing: Budget Rs 2,500-5,000. Comfortable Rs 7,500-15,000. Premium Rs 25,000-50,000.

Kedarnath trek — the big variable

The 16-km trek from Gaurikund, with 1,400 metres of elevation gain, is where costs diverge sharply.

Walk: Free. 6-8 hours up, 4-5 hours down. Requires reasonable fitness.

Pony: Rs 2,500-5,000 one way. Rates are negotiable, higher in peak season.

Doli/Palki: Rs 4,500-7,000 one way. Carried by four people. Common for elderly pilgrims.

Helicopter: Rs 3,000-6,400 one way. Book via IRCTC HeliYatra portal. Round-trip fares for 2026: Sirsi sector Rs 6,390, Phata sector Rs 10,164, Guptkashi sector Rs 12,762 (plus Rs 300 convenience fee and 18% GST). Dynamic pricing applies: +20% if booked 6-15 days ahead, +40% if 1-5 days, +50% same day.

For two people, helicopter both ways from Phata: approximately Rs 24,000-28,000 total including taxes.

Yamunotri trek

The 6-km trek from Janki Chatti is shorter but steep. Walk for free, pony Rs 1,500-4,500 one way, doli Rs 3,000-6,000 one way. No helicopter service to Yamunotri.

Food

Food on the yatra route is simple and vegetarian. Meat and alcohol are not available in shrine towns.

Budget: Rs 300-500 per person per day (dhaba thalis at Rs 100-200 each). Comfortable: Rs 500-700 (hotel restaurants). Premium: Rs 700-1,200. In Kedarnath town, prices are higher because everything is carried up by pony or porter.

For 10 days, per person: Budget Rs 3,000-5,000. Comfortable Rs 5,000-7,000. Premium Rs 7,000-12,000.

Registration and darshan

Biometric registration: Free. Mandatory for all pilgrims. Register online or at biometric counters in Rishikesh, Haridwar, or Sonprayag. You need Aadhaar or valid ID.

VIP darshan: Rs 300-500 per person at Kedarnath and Badrinath. Saves 2-4 hours of waiting in peak season.

Medical fitness certificate: Required for Kedarnath trek. Available at designated checkup centres for Rs 50-100.

Puja and offerings

Most shrines have no entry fee. Special pujas: basic Rs 200-500, special abhishek Rs 1,100-5,100, prasad offerings Rs 100-500. Budget Rs 500-2,000 per person for the full circuit.

Incidentals — the expenses people forget

Warm clothing purchased en route: Rs 500-2,000. Rain gear: Rs 200-500. Medicines: Rs 200-500. Phone charging: Rs 50-100 per charge. Tips for porters, ponywallas, drivers: Rs 1,000-3,000 over the trip. Bottled water: Rs 500-1,000. Unexpected halts due to landslides: Rs 1,000-3,000. Budget at least Rs 3,000-5,000 per person.

The totals

Full Char Dham (10-14 days, per person)

Budget tier: Rs 40,000-45,000. Shared transport, GMVN guesthouses, dhaba meals, walking Kedarnath trek.

Comfortable tier: Rs 50,000-60,000. Dedicated taxi split two ways, mid-range hotels, helicopter to Kedarnath, hotel meals.

Premium tier: Rs 85,000-1,00,000. Private SUV, best available hotels, helicopter, all VIP darshan, special pujas.

If you walk the Kedarnath trek instead of taking the helicopter, subtract Rs 10,000-12,000 from each tier.

Do Dham — Kedarnath and Badrinath (5-7 days, per person)

Budget: Rs 25,000-30,000. Shared transport, basic hotels, walk to Kedarnath.

Comfortable: Rs 35,000-40,000. Dedicated taxi, mid-range hotels, helicopter.

Premium: Rs 55,000-65,000. Private SUV, best hotels, helicopter, VIP services.

Badrinath only (3-4 days from Rishikesh, per person)

Much more manageable: Rs 4,000-7,500 shared taxi, Rs 2,000-4,000 accommodation for two nights, Rs 1,000-1,500 meals, Rs 1,000-2,000 incidentals. Total per person: Rs 8,000-15,000.

Practical advice

Book the Kedarnath helicopter early. Slots fill weeks in advance. IRCTC HeliYatra opens bookings 1-2 months before season. Early booking avoids dynamic pricing surcharges.

Travel in a group of 4. Taxi costs are per vehicle. Four people in an Innova halves the transport cost compared to two.

Carry warm layers from home. Buying jackets at Rishikesh costs more than bringing them.

Budget 20% above your estimate. Landslides, weather delays, and unexpected halts happen on this route. A buffer means you are not stressed when a road closure adds a day.

Do not attempt the full circuit in under 10 days. People who try 6-7 day circuits arrive at each shrine exhausted and remember nothing. The savings are not worth it.
