Joshimath: the mountain base camp

Joshimath (1,875m) is a real working town — not a resort, not a hill station, but a lived-in Garhwali settlement that happens to be the gateway to almost everywhere worth going in upper Uttarakhand. It's the base for Badrinath (45 km), Valley of Flowers (25 km to Govindghat trailhead), Auli (15 km), and the winter road closure point for everything above.

The town has a main bazaar with shops, pharmacies, ATMs (SBI and PNB work most reliably), restaurants, and a range of hotels from ₹800 budget rooms to ₹3,500 mid-range. The famous Narsingh temple and Shankaracharya math (one of four established by Adi Shankaracharya) are here.

Joshimath made national news in January 2023 when land subsidence caused cracks in buildings and forced evacuations. The affected zone is primarily in the older part of town (Marwari ward). The main road, market area, and most tourist hotels are in stable areas and fully operational. The NTPC has since implemented remediation measures.

Auli: the meadow resort

Auli (2,500m) is 15 km from Joshimath by road, or 4 km by the Joshimath–Auli cable car (one of Asia's longest gondola rides). The vibe is completely different from Joshimath — Auli is a ski resort and meadow destination, not a town. There's no bazaar, no local market, and limited services.

What Auli does have is views. On a clear day, you can see Nanda Devi (7,816m, India's second highest peak), Kamet, Mana Parvat, and a panoramic sweep of Himalayan peaks that stretches across your entire field of vision. The oak and conifer forests around Auli are pristine, and the meadows (bugyals) are carpeted with wildflowers in summer.

Accommodation in Auli ranges from the GMVN ski resort (₹2,000–4,000/night) to private resorts like Clifftop Club and The Royal Village (₹5,000–12,000/night). In winter, Auli operates as a ski destination with a 500m ski slope, equipment rental, and instructors. In summer, it's a peaceful base for meadow walks and the Gorson Bugyal trek.

When to choose Joshimath

Stay in Joshimath if:

• You're visiting Badrinath and need an early morning start. Joshimath is 45 km from Badrinath; Auli adds 15 km to that. • You're trekking to Valley of Flowers or Hemkund Sahib. Govindghat trailhead is on the Joshimath–Badrinath road, 25 km from Joshimath. • You need town amenities: pharmacies, ATMs, multiple restaurant options, mobile network (Jio and Airtel work in Joshimath but not in Auli). • You're on a budget. Joshimath has ₹800–1,500 rooms; Auli starts at ₹2,000 minimum. • You're acclimatizing for higher altitude. Spending a night at 1,875m before going to Badrinath (3,133m) or Hemkund (4,329m) is medically advisable, especially for elders. • You're travelling in monsoon (July–September). Auli's meadows are muddy and views are cloud-covered most of the time.

When to choose Auli

Stay in Auli if:

• You want Himalayan views from your room. Auli's south-facing aspect gives unobstructed views of the Nanda Devi range. Joshimath's views are limited by surrounding hillsides. • You're skiing (December–March). Auli is Uttarakhand's only proper ski destination, with a maintained slope, ski lifts, and rental equipment. • You want quiet. Auli has no traffic noise, no market bustle. It's a place to sit on a deck chair with chai and stare at mountains. • You're doing the Gorson Bugyal trek. The trailhead is at Auli, leading to a spectacular alpine meadow at 3,056m. The 7 km trek takes 3–4 hours and is one of the finest easy treks in Uttarakhand. • You're visiting in winter specifically for snow. Auli gets proper snowfall from December to February. Joshimath gets some, but it melts faster at the lower altitude.

Hotels and homestays: where to book

Joshimath options: • Budget (₹800–1,500): Hotel Kamet, Hotel Dronagiri, and several guesthouses near the bus stand. Basic but clean, with hot water (bucket or geyser) and meals on request. • Mid-range (₹2,000–3,500): Hotel Mount View, Hotel Himgiri. Better rooms, restaurant, valley views from upper floors. • Homestays: A growing option — local families rent rooms for ₹1,000–2,000 including home-cooked Garhwali meals. Ask at the tourist office or through Pahadi Express.

Auli options: • GMVN Tourist Rest House (₹2,000–4,000): Government-run, reliable, good views. Book early for ski season. • Private resorts (₹5,000–12,000): Clifftop Club Auli, The Royal Village, Auli Resort. Full-service with restaurants, room heaters, and maintained grounds. • Camps (seasonal, ₹2,500–4,000): In summer, several operators set up luxury tents near the meadows. A unique experience if weather cooperates.

Booking tip: In peak season (May–June and December–January), book at least 2–3 weeks in advance. In shoulder months, walk-ins are fine in Joshimath. Auli's limited inventory means booking ahead is always safer.
