Mobile network coverage: town by town
The Rishikesh-Badrinath corridor runs 295 km through deep river valleys and over high passes. Mobile signal follows the valleys and drops in every gorge. Here is the honest, town-by-town picture.
Rishikesh (372 m): Full 4G on all operators — Jio, Airtel, BSNL, and Vi. Download offline maps and any content you need before leaving town.
Devprayag (472 m): Good coverage on Jio and Airtel. BSNL works for calls. Short signal dips in gorge sections between Rishikesh and Devprayag.
Srinagar, Garhwal (560 m): Good 4G on Jio and Airtel. Multiple towers in town. Make any calls or downloads here.
Rudraprayag (895 m): Jio and Airtel 4G available in town. BSNL works for voice. Dead zones exist on the river road between Srinagar and Rudraprayag.
Chamoli / Gopeshwar (1,066 m): Patchy. Jio has the best coverage with 4G in town centres. Airtel works intermittently. BSNL provides voice service. Signal drops between towns are common.
Pipalkoti (1,260 m): Jio 4G works here. Airtel is weaker. Brief connectivity window before the final climb.
Joshimath (1,875 m): 4G available on Jio and Airtel in the main bazaar area. BSNL has 3G/4G coverage — BSNL has been expanding its 4G network across Uttarakhand with over 96,000 sites activated nationwide as of early 2026. This is your last stop for reliable data — make video calls, upload photos, and download anything you need here.
Govindghat (1,828 m, 20 km past Joshimath): Faint Jio signal, enough for WhatsApp text messages. No reliable data on any network.
Hanuman Chatti / Pandukeshwar: Effectively no signal on any network.
Badrinath (3,133 m): BSNL has the most consistent coverage — voice calls usually work, with intermittent 2G/3G data. Jio has a tower but signal strength is weak and often 2G-only. Airtel and Vi are unreliable. WhatsApp text messages may go through on BSNL or Jio; video calls and streaming will not work.
Bottom line: Assume you are off-grid from Joshimath onwards. Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me), share your taxi driver's phone number with family, and make all important calls before leaving Joshimath.
Which network to carry
Jio — the best single-SIM choice for this corridor. Widest tower coverage from Rishikesh through Joshimath, and a usable signal at Badrinath.
BSNL — the best backup SIM, and the strongest network at Badrinath itself. BSNL is the government-operated network with towers in remote stretches where private operators have no presence. It primarily operates on 2G/3G in mountainous areas but has been rolling out 4G across Uttarakhand with indigenous equipment. If you have a dual-SIM phone, carry BSNL as your second SIM.
Airtel — reliable in towns from Rishikesh to Joshimath but drops faster than Jio in valleys between towns. Not recommended as your only SIM for this route.
Vi (Vodafone-Idea) — weakest coverage on this route. Not recommended for mountain travel.
International roaming SIMs: Expect these to stop working beyond Rishikesh. Buy a local Jio or BSNL SIM in Rishikesh before heading into the mountains.
ATM locations along the route
Carry sufficient cash from Rishikesh or Haridwar. ATMs become unreliable after Chamoli and frequently run out of cash during peak season (May-June).
Key takeaway: Joshimath is the last town with a functioning ATM you can reasonably count on. Withdraw enough cash there to cover your entire stay at Badrinath and the return journey.
UPI and digital payments
UPI (PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm) works at many shops and hotels in Rishikesh, Rudraprayag, and Joshimath — wherever there is stable mobile data.
At Badrinath, UPI acceptance depends entirely on mobile signal. Some larger hotels and shops accept UPI when BSNL or Jio signal is available, but transactions frequently fail due to poor connectivity. Do not count on UPI working at Badrinath. Carry cash.
Credit and debit card machines (POS) are rare beyond Rishikesh and essentially non-existent at Badrinath.
How much cash to carry
Estimate your expenses from Joshimath onward:
2 nights accommodation at Badrinath: 2,000-5,000 rupees
Meals (2 days, 3 meals/day): 1,000-1,500 rupees
Temple offerings and prasad: 200-500 rupees
Mana village shopping and snacks: 500-1,000 rupees
Contingency (medicine, emergency): 1,000-2,000 rupees
Recommended cash from Joshimath: 6,000-10,000 rupees per couple. Families or groups should carry proportionally more. Carry small denominations — change is scarce at Badrinath.
Staying connected at Badrinath
Most hotels in Badrinath do not have reliable WiFi. The BSNL network provides the best chance for voice calls in the town area. WhatsApp text messages can be sent when you catch even a 2G signal — keep messages short and avoid sending photos until you return to Joshimath.
For anything bandwidth-intensive — video calls, photo uploads, social media — wait until you are back in Joshimath or lower.
