Why June draws the biggest crowds
June is the busiest month in Uttarakhand's pilgrimage and tourism calendar. Schools across north India are on summer break, all four Char Dham temples are fully open, and the pre-monsoon weather at altitude is mostly stable. Badrinath can receive 15,000-20,000 pilgrims on peak June weekends. Kedarnath helicopter slots sell out 4-6 weeks in advance.
This is not a warning — it is context. June is when Uttarakhand is most alive. If you plan around the crowds and the heat, it is one of the best months to be here.
Early June (1-15) offers more stable weather and drier roads. Late June (16-30) brings the monsoon onset — the monsoon typically arrives in Uttarakhand around June 20-24, based on IMD historical data. In 2025 it advanced into most of the state on June 20 and covered it fully by June 24. Plan accordingly.
Weather by altitude in June
Rishikesh and Haridwar (350 m): Hot. Average highs of 36-39 degrees, lows around 24-28 degrees. Humidity is high and rising through the month. Rainfall picks up — roughly 130 mm total across 3-8 rainy days. About 7 hours of sunshine per day. Nobody lingers here in June unless rafting.
Mid-altitude towns — Rudraprayag, Chamoli (800-1,500 m): 25-32 degrees days, 16-20 degrees nights. Warm but tolerable. Pleasant evenings. The river valleys funnel heat upward, so midday can feel hotter than the numbers suggest.
Joshimath (1,890 m): 14-17 degrees days in the first half, warming to 16-17 degrees by month end. Nights are 4-9 degrees. Comfortable during the day, cool at night. Good sleeping weather. Humidity around 58-65 percent.
Badrinath (3,133 m): 10-13 degrees days, 2-6 degrees nights. Cool and mostly clear mornings. Afternoon cloud buildup is normal. Average rainfall 73-110 mm across the month, concentrated in the second half as monsoon arrives. Expect 5-9 hours of sunshine per day depending on the week.
Kedarnath (3,583 m): 6-18 degrees days (warmer than you expect because of the south-facing valley), 0-5 degrees nights. Snow clears fully from the main trek trail by mid-June in a normal year. Around 36 mm of rainfall across roughly 10 rainy days. Nearly 14 hours of daylight.
What is open in June
Everything. All four Char Dham temples — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — are fully operational. The Valley of Flowers National Park opens June 1 (confirmed for 2026) and remains open until early October. Hemkund Sahib is typically open by late May. The Govindghat to Ghangaria base trek (13 km) is fully accessible in June. The valley in June has early-season wildflowers — not the full riot of colour that comes in August, but uncrowded and beautiful.
Mana village (the last Indian village before the Tibetan border) is open and accessible from Badrinath. Vasudhara Falls is flowing. Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila is accessible and pleasant.
Crowd levels and how to manage them
Travel mid-week. Weekends bring the heaviest traffic on NH-7 and the longest darshan queues. Arrive Sunday evening or Monday morning for the calmest window.
Go early for darshan at Badrinath. The temple opens at 4:30 AM with abhishek (special puja) until 6:30 AM — limited slots, book through the BKTC website or at the temple office. Regular darshan resumes at 7 AM. Before 8 AM, the queue is typically 30-60 minutes. By afternoon on peak June days, expect 2-4 hours.
Sampoorna darshan pass. Available at the temple information counter for around 250-450 rupees. Gives access to a faster queue. Worth it in June.
Kedarnath trek congestion. The 18 km trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath (1,400 m elevation gain) is manageable in June, but pilgrim volume makes the trail genuinely crowded. Horses and palanquins add to the congestion on narrow sections.
Book Kedarnath helicopters early. Book through the IRCTC HeliYatra website (heliyatra.irctc.co.in) at least 4-6 weeks ahead for June. Round-trip fares for 2026: Sirsi helipad 6,390 rupees (7-minute flight), Phata 10,164 rupees (9-minute flight), Guptkashi 12,762 rupees (10-15-minute flight) — plus 300 rupees convenience fee and 18 percent GST. Only book through the official IRCTC website. One-way tickets are not available; all bookings are return flights.
What to book in advance for June
Badrinath accommodation: 3-4 weeks ahead. GMVN Badrinath is the most reliable government option.

Ghangaria guesthouses (for Hemkund Sahib or Valley of Flowers): 2 weeks ahead.
Chopta guesthouses: 1-2 weeks ahead for weekends.
Taxi from Rishikesh or Haridwar: Book at least 1 week ahead during peak June weekends. Pahadi Express runs dedicated Char Dham corridor taxis.
Pros and cons of June travel
In your favour: All temples and attractions open. Best pre-monsoon weather at altitude. Longest daylight hours (nearly 14 hours). Maximum energy and atmosphere at pilgrimage sites. Valley of Flowers accessible from June 1.
Working against you: Extreme heat in the valleys below 1,000 m (36-39 degrees in Rishikesh). Largest crowds of the year at Badrinath and Kedarnath. Highway traffic jams, especially near Joshimath. Late June monsoon onset can disrupt travel. Hotel prices at their highest.
What to pack for June
Layering system: Light cottons for the valleys, fleece or light down jacket for Badrinath and Kedarnath evenings
Waterproof jacket: Essential for late June monsoon onset, useful even in early June for afternoon showers
Sun protection: Hat, sunscreen (SPF 50), sunglasses — UV intensity is high at 3,000 m plus
Comfortable walking shoes: Waterproof preferred if trekking to Kedarnath or Valley of Flowers
Cash: ATMs are available in Joshimath but can run dry during peak weekends. Carry enough for 2-3 days.
