Uttarakhand in October — post-monsoon golden window

October is arguably the best month to visit Uttarakhand. The monsoon is over, the skies are crystalline, the forests turn amber, and the temples are still open but calm. Crowds are a fraction of the June peak.

The October advantage

October falls in the post-monsoon window between the end of the rains (late September) and the temple closures (November). The air has been washed clean by three months of rain. Himalayan views from Badrinath, Joshimath, and Chopta are at their clearest. The forest between Rishikesh and Joshimath turns from lush green to amber and yellow. And the pilgrim crowds that define June drop to a fraction of peak levels.

For many experienced travellers on the Char Dham route, October is the best-kept open secret.

On a clear October morning at Badrinath, the Neelkanth peak (6,596 m) immediately south of the temple is often dusted with fresh snow against a cobalt blue sky. This view is at its best in October and early November — before the valley clouds over for winter.

Weather in October by altitude

Rishikesh and Haridwar (350 m): Warm and pleasant, 28-34 degrees. The humidity of monsoon has lifted. This is the best month to spend time in Rishikesh itself if you combine it with a mountain trip.

Mid-altitude towns — Chamoli, Rudraprayag (900-1,800 m): 20-26 degrees days, 12-16 degrees nights. Ideal conditions. Clear air, comfortable for walking and driving.

Joshimath (1,890 m): 15-20 degrees days, 5-10 degrees nights. Crisp and clear. Post-monsoon air clarity means mountain views are at their sharpest.

Badrinath (3,133 m): 5-12 degrees days, minus 2 to 3 degrees nights. Cold but manageable with layers. Mornings are typically clear with excellent visibility. Temple is open until mid-November (tentative closing date: November 13, 2026).

Chopta-Tungnath (2,680-3,680 m): 8-18 degrees days. Dry trails, clear skies. Snowfall is not typical in October at these elevations — it usually begins in November. However, early October 2025 saw unusual snowfall at Char Dham elevations due to a western disturbance, so conditions can vary.

Kedarnath (3,583 m): Around 6 degrees days, minus 5 degrees nights. Cold but clear. Significantly quieter than any other open month.

Temple closing timeline for 2026

All four Char Dham temples close for winter in October or November. The dates are tied to the Hindu calendar (Diwali falls on November 8, 2026; Bhai Dooj on November 11, 2026):

Yamunotri: Closes on Bhai Dooj — November 11, 2026

Gangotri: Closes on Bhai Dooj — November 11, 2026

Kedarnath: Closes on Bhai Dooj — November 11, 2026 (the idol moves to Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath for winter worship)

Badrinath: Closes approximately 15-20 days after Diwali — tentatively November 13, 2026 (the idol moves to Narasimha Temple in Joshimath). Exact date announced on Vijayadashami by BKTC.

For reference, in 2025 the temples closed as follows: Kedarnath on October 23, Badrinath on November 25, Gangotri and Yamunotri on the same Bhai Dooj date. The 2026 dates shift because of the lunar calendar.

Check BKTC and the respective temple committee websites for confirmed dates before booking.

Crowds and costs

October footfall at Badrinath is significantly lower than the May-June peak. Where June sees 15,000-20,000 daily pilgrims on peak weekends, October numbers are a fraction of that — mostly serious pilgrims and experienced travellers rather than large family groups. The final week before closing drops even further.

This is the only time you can approach Badrinath temple in the morning without a substantial queue. Darshan that takes 2-4 hours in June can be done in 15-30 minutes in October.

Hotel prices in Joshimath and Badrinath drop 15-25 percent from June peaks. Kedarnath helicopter services are available with better seat availability — most October bookings come through with 1-2 weeks' notice rather than 4-6 weeks.

What to do in October

Badrinath and Mana village. October is excellent. Clear skies, Neelkanth views at their sharpest, Vasudhara Falls still flowing well, Mana village accessible without the June crowds or monsoon mud.

Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila. The trek to Chandrashila summit (4,000 m) in October offers post-monsoon clarity that is hard to match at any other time. The rhododendron forest has turned from summer green to autumn colours. Dry trails, crystal-blue sky, and uninterrupted panoramas of Nanda Devi, Trisul, and Chaukhamba. Highly recommended.

Roopkund trek (5,029 m). October is one of the best months for this serious high-altitude trek. Post-monsoon clarity, stable weather, manageable snow on the upper section. The frozen lake shrinks and melts, making the famous skeleton deposits visible. A guided trek with a reputable agency is strongly recommended — Roopkund is a demanding route. Daytime temperatures 7-12 degrees, nighttime minus 2 to minus 7 degrees at higher camps.

Valley of Flowers. Open until early October (closing around October 4, 2026). The intense colour show of August is over, but late-season asters and composites are still in bloom. The valley has a quieter, amber-tinged character. Fewer visitors, better light for photography.

Auli. The Gorson Bugyal meadow in October has clear views of Nanda Devi (7,816 m). The gondola runs. Pre-ski season, so no crowds. The meadow grass has turned golden.

What to pack for October

Warm layers: Down jacket or heavy fleece for Badrinath and Kedarnath evenings (temperatures drop below zero at night above 3,000 m)

Thermals: Essential for nights at Badrinath and any camping above 3,500 m

Sun protection: October sun at altitude is deceptively strong — hat, SPF 50, sunglasses

Light waterproof: Occasional post-monsoon showers are possible in early October

Good trekking shoes: Trails are mostly dry but can have loose sections after monsoon
