Sample itinerary
Day by day
Day 1Rishikesh to Sondhari village
You meet your group in Rishikesh at 7 am and begin the drive up — through Devprayag, Rudraprayag, past Joshimath, and up the mountain to Sondhari, a remote village near Auli at 2,500m. The road itself is the first photo essay: river confluences, terraced fields, snow-capped peaks appearing as you climb. You arrive by late afternoon. Your host family has chai waiting. Settle into the village homestay, walk the lanes before the light fades, and eat a home-cooked Pahadi dinner by the fire.
Pickup 7 am Rishikesh. ~9 hr drive with stops. Arrive Sondhari by 4 pm.
Day 2Village walks + golden hour
A full day in and around Sondhari. Morning light on the terraced fields, smoke rising from stone houses, faces weathered by altitude. Your guide — a local photographer — takes you through the village lanes, the temple, the school, the water source. You photograph people who live at 2,500m: their hands, their doors, their routines. Afternoon is a walk to a viewpoint above the village — Nanda Devi and the Auli ridge visible in clear weather. Golden hour from this clearing is the shot of the trip.
~8 km walking. No rush. All meals at the homestay.
Day 3Landscapes + astrophotography
Morning hike to a meadow above the treeline — wide-open landscapes, the Himalayan wall to the north. Spend the morning shooting panoramas, wildflowers, cloud formations. Afternoon is editing, rest, and chai with your host family. After dinner, the real magic: Sondhari has zero light pollution. Your guide sets up for astrophotography — milky way arcing over the peaks, star trails over the village, long exposures that show what your eyes can't. The sky at 2,500m with no artificial light is something you carry home.
Astro shoot 9 pm–midnight. Tripods and warm layers provided.
Day 4Sunrise + farewell
Last sunrise from the village. The light at 2,500m in May hits different — warm, clear, the mountains pink for exactly 12 minutes. A long breakfast with your host family. Review your favourite shots from the trip. Pack up and begin the drive back to Rishikesh, arriving by evening. You leave with a hard drive full of images and a village you'll want to return to.
Depart Sondhari 10 am. Reach Rishikesh by 7 pm.
